Tragedy has struck key leaders at A Rocha, a British Christian environmental organization founded by Peter and Miranda Harris. The organization’s press release explains everything known at the moment:

On Monday 28th October Peter and Miranda Harris, co-founders of A Rocha, and Chris Naylor, A Rocha International CEO, together with his wife Susanna, were involved in an horrific car accident in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Miranda, Chris and Susanna did not survive. Peter and the driver of the car are being treated at a local hospital and are in a stable condition. We await further news on their progress.

Above all, their families and friends are held in our prayers.

We know that this comes as a profound shock to everyone in the A Rocha Family and others all around the world. A more detailed announcement will be made in due course.

I explained A Rocha’s history in a review of Leah Kostamo’s book, Planted: A Story of Creation, Calling, and Community. Here is one paragraph:

A Rocha (Portuguese for “the rock”) is an international Christian environmental organization founded in 1983 by Anglican Reverend Peter Harris and his wife, Miranda. The couple anchored themselves in Psalm 24:1 (“The Earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it”), moved to Portugal’s southern Algarve region and founded a nature center. Students and interns flocked and A Rocha spread to twenty countries, with each center and team agreeing to “five core commitments:” Christian, Conservation, Community, Cross-Cultural, and Cooperation. The Harrises eventually handed the Algarve facility to Portuguese residents and, after a stint in France, returned to Britain. Peter serves as the organization’s president.

Katharine Hayhoe, a climate scientist helping to spear-head climate climate change awareness, said this on Facebook:

Grieving the loss of Miranda Harris, one of the most truly soul-beautiful people I’ve ever met.

She and her husband Peter co-founded A Rocha, an international conservation organization that has felt like my spiritual family for the last decade.

They were visiting projects in South Africa when they were involved in a car accident that also took the lives of A Rocha director Chris Naylor and his wife Susanna, and left Peter in the hospital.

Please consider a donation to A Rocha’s many amazing projects, from food to clean water to conservation, in their names.
