Donald Trump Saves The Democrats

President Donald Trump has, once again, rescued the Democrats from falling off their self-constructed political cliff — and he did it before his Sunday morning golf game. It’s a pity. Forces may have been compelling The Party of trump twitter imageRoosevelt and Truman to face its demons. The day of reckoning has been delayed.

The Democratic vision has shriveled from The New Deal and the Great Society, which extolled “the forgotten person,” and now caters to the cultural left’s panoply of snarky identities. Some entertain proposals designed to alienate the heartland. A few presidential candidates, for example, have called for prostitution’s decriminalization. Never mind the proposals dubious merits; someone needs to announce the obvious: “We need to win states like Florida, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Michigan in 2020.”

What’s more, it seems that four House freshmen are out for blood. They owe everything to their twitter flocks and nothing to Speaker Nancy Pelosi (or so they think), so they tossed her public barbs. Headlines blared of party division.

Enter Trump to save the day. He thumbed a tweet storm on the morning of July 14 and said the representatives “originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe.” They should “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.”

Democrats, including Pelosi, rallied to their defense.

Here are all the tweets:

Trump July 19

No surprise here, but Trump didn’t apply much thought to these tweets. First, three of the four freshmen — Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, Alexandria Ocasio Cortez of New York — would be booking a short flight to her homeland. Each was born in the United States. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota arrived in the United States at the age of ten. Her family had fled war-ravaged Somalia and lived in a Kenyan refugee camp for four years.

Second, the tweets come on the eve of a planned draconian migrant roundup courtesy ICE; they remind all that the current anti-migrant wave wells from ignorant xenophobia. Third, Trump’s popularity is on the increase, largely due to a strong economy and his recent Twitter silence. In one fell swoop, he reminded America of his ignorance (again, he didn’t know each was American born), his racism (three of the four are African American; one, the most famous, is a Latina); and his misogyny (they’re all women).

My own hope: The Democrats will realize they were looking over the cliff’s edge. They’ll back away. They’ll see the distance between their cultural bubble and the American voter and the gap between them and their party’s noble heritage. Next time, Trump may not rescue them from their clumsiness.
