An island of blue in a sea of red

The Eastern Region’s headquarters of the US National Weather Service posted the following graphic on this year’s global temperatures on Facebook. Rather than wax ineloquent, I’ll supply their explanation and then the graphic:

“Some interesting perspectives on global temperatures thus far during 2014. March, and the first 3 months of this year (January-March) were much colder than normal across most of the eastern half of the US. However, temperatures across the rest of the planet tell a different story. Warmer than normal conditions occurred across much of the globe, especially over Alaska and Europe into parts of Asia. Despite the very cold conditions around our neck of the woods, across the entire globe March 2014 was the 4th warmest in the last 135 years (5th warmest counting only areas over land). The 3 month period of January through March 2014 was the 7th warmest globally in the last 135 years (11th warmest over land areas only).
